WEEK 8 Why Happy Kids Feels Like Home

Walk into Happy Kids and you won’t find a brightly lit, highly commercial nursery environment.
Instead, you’ll find soft lighting, natural materials, cosy spaces, comfortable furnishings and resources that invite the children to explore.
We have deliberately created an environment that feels more like home.
Why does this matter?
Young children spend a significant amount of time with us.
We want them to feel comfortable, secure and emotionally safe.
A calm, homely environment can help create that sense of belonging.
Our Hygge-inspired approach has been an important part of our environment for several years. We use natural light wherever possible, alongside lamps, gentle lighting, cosy textiles and comfortable spaces.
Natural materials
We have gradually moved away from an environment dominated by bright plastics and commercial furniture.
Instead, we love wood, wicker, cotton, linen, natural textures and authentic materials.
These resources don’t dictate what children should do with them.
A wooden bowl might become a mixing bowl, a treasure basket, a drum or something completely different.
And that’s exactly what we want.
The environment as the third teacher
We believe our environment communicates something to children.
It tells them:
“You are welcome here.”
“You can explore.”
“You can make choices.”
“You can take your time.”
“You can make this space your own.”
Our environment is continually evolving as we watch the children using it.
Because the best environment isn’t simply beautiful.
It works for the children who are actually in it.
