Less Plastic, More Possibility – The Power of Open-Ended Resources

Sometimes the simplest resources provide the richest opportunities for play.

A basket of wooden discs.

A collection of stones.

A piece of fabric.

A cardboard tube.

A wooden spoon.

A handful of shells.

To an adult, these might seem like ordinary objects.

To a child, they could become almost anything.

Open-ended play

Open-ended resources don’t have one correct way to be used.

This means children have to bring their own ideas, imagination and creativity to the experience.

A collection of loose parts might become a shop one day, a construction site the next and a magical fairy garden the day after.

There is no single right answer.

Intelligent Resources

This is an important part of our Curiosity Approach journey.

We aim to provide resources that encourage children to think, imagine, investigate and create rather than simply press a button or follow a predetermined sequence.

It’s not about removing all commercial toys.

It’s about creating a thoughtful balance.

What happens when we give children more possibilities?

We often see:

·       More imaginative play

·       Greater problem-solving

·       Collaboration between children

·       Richer language

·       Creativity

·       Independence

·       Persistence

·       More complex pretend play

Perhaps most importantly, children learn that their ideas have value.

And that is a powerful message.
